Gunter Hill Campground

Gunter Hill is a public RV park and campground operated by the U.S. Army Core of Engineers. It sits adjacent to the Alabama River on the delightfully named Gun Island Chute and is just a short drive to all the shops, restaurants, and recreation opportunities of downtown Montgomery, AL.

As a federally managed campground, it allows those with an Interagency Access Pass to camp there for half the going rate, a real bonus for disabled veterans and similar.

Capital City RV Park is a privately managed RV park located just north of Montgomery, AL within a block of the banks of the Tallapoosa River. It’s a short drive to downtown Montgomery and everything it has to offer, plus it’s located only 60 miles from the Talladega Superspeedway.

DeSoto State Park

DeSoto State Park is located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountain Range just off of I-59, near the top of Lookout Mountain. It was constructed in the 1930s by the men of the Civilian Conservation Corps and is about halfway between Birmingham, AL and Chattanooga, TN, just about 10 minutes outside the rustic town of Mentone, AL.

DeSoto is a fully developed campground with 84 RV and Tent sites. All sites have electric, and some offer full hookups. The campground itself is relatively basic but includes all the essentials such as hot showers, wifi at the bathhouses (often reachable from your site with a wifi signal booster), as well as the recreation opportunities of the greater state park itself.

It’s a great place to stop for a night or to stay for a spell and check out the beauty of Alabama’s little piece of the Appalachians.

Reason to stay at DeSoto State Park

DeSoto is ideally located to enjoy the stunning mountain views and rugged landscapes of northeastern Alabama. There are numerous hikes within walking distance of the campground, many with some spectacular waterfalls and calming mountain streams as part of the view. If you’re looking for a more thrilling pastime, many of the trails double as mountain biking trails as well.

It’s just a short drive away from the Little River Canyon Natural Preserve, with spots to put in kayaks and other small watercraft. The state park has a country store as well as a full service restaurant if you’re looking to stock up or grab a bite to eat.

The Gulf Breeze RV Resort is a privately owned RV park located just off the Alabama Gulf Shores beach. It has many sites with full hookups, excellent amenities, and plenty of fun recreation activities available.

You’re just a short drive away from the beach or the shopping and entertainment options of The Wharf, an open-air shopping, dining, and entertainment area. If you’re willing to drive a bit Battleship Park in nearby Mobile has the Battleship USS Alabama and submarine USS Drum available for tours and educational journeys. These are pristinely maintained warships that served proudly during WWII.

One of our favorite ways to spend time after nightfall was at one of the large communal gas firepits. They’re great for setting up an impromptu sing-a-long or roasting some marshmallows with family.

A few extra amenities we really loved were available bike and golf cart rentals, a large selection of cable TV channels, LPG refill station, and a fully outfitted business center in case you need to send off an email or check your portfolio.

Magnolia Farms RV Park is located just off the Gulf of Mexico in Foley, AL. It’s further back from the waterfront than many other area RV parks, offering a quieter and more laid-back atmosphere for those looking to relax plus a more affordable price during the high season.

Don’t let that scare you off though, as you can still get to all the area attractions just a short drive away. You’re in a great location to get to Gulf Shores, Fairhope, or greater Mobile just down the highway.

Magnolia is an excellent choice if you’re looking to save a bit of money and enjoy the quiet life. It’s in a lovely rural setting yet still offers a range of amenities and recreation opportunities.

Dothan RV Park is located in charming Dothan, AL, the Peanut Capital of the World. If you stop by in November, you can experience the National Peanut Festival, a celebration of everything peanut-related that’s very much worth a stop.

Cherry Blossom offers convenient access to downtown Dothan, the Peanut Festival Fairgrounds, and plenty of shops and restaurants. It’s located just 20 miles west of the Georgia state line and 12 miles north of the Florida state line. That gives you a great place to stop on the way to or from those states or to stay for a spell and discover what southern Alabama has to offer.

Dothan RV park was newly renovated in late 2019, adding multiple new sites and improving virtually every facility. They offer a full range of recreation options including a dog run, outdoor games, communal gathering and seating areas, a playground for the kids, plus a pool and walking trails.
